21th Annual Meeting

2009 (27-29 November), Academy of Mission, Hamburg

Global Crises as an Ecumenical Challenge

The beginning of the 21st century is experienced by many as a period of crisis. In the field of economy, politics and the environment there is a strong feeling of emergency. Crisis is not a new phenomenon in the history of mankind. The characteristic of many present crises is that they concern phenomena that are being felt on a world-wide scale, that is: throughout the whole oikumenè.

What does this awareness of crisis mean for the ecu-menical movement? How does it affect the way Christians all over the world are connected (or disconnected) with each other? Does it offer new possibilities for cooperation? And does this lead to a drifting apart of ‘Work and Life’ and ‘Faith and Order’ questions? Or will the situation stimulate interconfessional dialogues to develop common theological categories that allow us to speak together about a world marked by crisis and about our faith in this world?

Main speaker

Prof. Dr. Christoph Böttigheimer

Christoph Böttigheimer is professor of fundamental theology at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (Germany).
